Invited talk on quasinormal modes of thin elastic plates at Metamaterials 2024 in Chania, Crete. Abstract and slides available.

I gave an invited talk on our latest work on quasinormal modes in elasticity at Metamaterials 2024. It was great to be back in Chania, Crete, after attending the 10th anniversary edition of the congress there in 2016.
Topic
Quasinormal modes (QNMs) are the natural resonances of open systems. Energy leaks to the surroundings, so their frequencies are complex: the real part sets the resonance and the imaginary part its decay rate. QNM expansions are well established in electromagnetism, and the talk extends them to flexural waves in thin elastic plates. Expanding the scattered field on a few modes gives a reduced order model that explains which resonances respond to a given excitation, and it costs far less than a direct solve at every frequency.
The figure above shows the first nine QNMs of a plate with a finite line of pinned points.
